Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool is increasingly uncertain, with reports suggesting the Uruguayan forward is contemplating an exit from Anfield for reasons beyond football. According to sources, including Sky Sports Switzerland, Nunez is unsettled and could push for a move in the summer.
Since joining Liverpool, Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled with consistency. Under new manager Arne Slot, he has often found himself relegated to a squad role, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz preferred in attacking positions at various stages of the season.
The speculation surrounding Nunez’s future intensified after his goal-scoring performance against Southampton, where he celebrated by making a shushing gesture. Whether this was directed at his critics or in response to ongoing transfer rumours remains unclear. However, fresh reports indicate that his potential departure is about more than just football.
Sky Sports Switzerland claims Nunez is considering leaving Liverpool due to dissatisfaction with life in England. The report states: “Darwin Nunez, tired of the gloomy English climate, would like to join a club closer to his Latin culture and has opened the door to a departure this summer.”

While the 24-year-old has not made a final decision, indications suggest he is leaning towards a move. He is expected to wait until the end of the season before making a definitive call. This revelation puts several European clubs on alert, particularly those keen on acquiring a dynamic striker.
A move to the Saudi Pro League has previously been suggested, but reports indicate that a switch within Europe remains a strong possibility.
Atletico Madrid are among the clubs closely following developments, with manager Diego Simeone seeking a long-term successor for Antoine Griezmann, who turns 34 later this month. The Spanish club’s interest aligns with Nunez’s desire to play in a league and environment more suited to his background.
Atletico’s attacking options require reinforcement, and Nunez, with his pace, physicality, and pressing ability, fits Simeone’s tactical blueprint. Whether the Spanish giants will make a formal approach remains to be seen, but their admiration for the forward is clear.
Despite Nunez’s inconsistency, Liverpool would prefer to retain the striker. However, if he pushes for a departure, the club has reportedly set a valuation of €80 million (£67.1m) as the starting point for negotiations.
Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Liverpool came “very close” to selling Nunez to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the January transfer window. The move was on the verge of completion before Liverpool pulled out in the final stages, prioritising squad depth as they competed on multiple fronts.
While Liverpool have been linked with striking reinforcements, including Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, the club’s stance on Nunez suggests they are not actively seeking to offload him. However, should Atletico Madrid or another top European side make a concrete offer, the situation could evolve quickly.
For now, Nunez’s future remains uncertain, but with the summer transfer window approaching, a high-profile departure from Anfield cannot be ruled out.
