Liverpool’s grip on the Premier League title tightened even further after their 3-1 victory over Southampton, leaving fans asking not if, but when the trophy will officially be secured. The Media Matters podcast from Anfield Index featured David Lynch and Dave Davis, breaking down the latest developments in Liverpool’s title charge.
With the win against Southampton, Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table extended to fifteen points. While some may still be cautious, Lynch didn’t hold back:
“It’s absolutely done. I don’t think anybody should be worried. Now it’s just a case of how quickly Liverpool can win it and what game will they get their hands on the title?”
Lynch pointed to the mathematical challenge of overturning such a lead, making it almost impossible for their rivals to claw back:
“I think people always underrate what the opposition have to do, what kind of points per game they would have to go to, to overturn, say, a nine, seven, nine-point gap, something like that.”
Despite the dominance, Arne Slot made it clear that he wasn’t impressed with the team’s first-half performance against Southampton. Liverpool went into halftime trailing 1-0 in what Lynch described as a complacent display:
“It’s one of the rare occasions really where I would have said Liverpool were being complacent. Southampton, who are potentially on track to be the worst Premier League team of all time, kind of looked comfortable.”
It was a game of two halves, with Slot making bold changes at halftime to turn things around. He didn’t hesitate to make three substitutions, a rarity for him, explaining after the game:
“Something had to happen. I tried to warn them before the game, tried to warn them yesterday already. It didn’t work out, probably, as you can see the first half.”
Lynch emphasised Slot’s ability to make in-game adjustments that completely changed Liverpool’s approach:
“That’s something we’re learning about Arne Slot – he is an absolute expert in making in-game changes that make Liverpool better.”
This isn’t the first time the Liverpool manager’s tactical flexibility has been key. Lynch referenced Slot’s substitutions in Paris against PSG, which also swung the momentum in Liverpool’s favour:
“He still got hammered in PSG, didn’t he, in midweek, but the reason they win that game is because of his in-game changes.”
Liverpool’s fans are now turning their attention to the title-clinching moment. With Arsenal and Manchester City struggling to match the Reds’ consistency, Lynch suggested Liverpool might even enjoy a guard of honour in multiple games:
“It’s quite nice – not a lot of clubs get to enjoy the run-in where you’ve basically got the league title wrapped up.”
Davis echoed the sentiment, urging fans to savour every moment of what has been a remarkable season:
“That’s why everyone’s starting to think – when is it going to happen? But let’s just enjoy every minute, as you say.”
With the Premier League title within touching distance, Liverpool fans can start planning the celebrations. As Lynch summed up:
“Liverpool are going to win the Premier League title. So yeah, as bad as that first half was, it’s so easy to quickly move on from it. And Liverpool got the job done.”
For Arne Slot’s Liverpool, the challenge now is not just winning the title but ensuring they carry momentum into Europe and domestic cup competitions. Victory in the Premier League may be inevitable – but Liverpool aren’t stopping there.
