Former Manchester United star Luis Nani has insisted that the current players must demonstrate a willingness to meet Ruben Amorim’s high standards and demands, in order for the Portuguese coach to be a hit.
Amorim was officially named United head coach earlier this month, following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.
He took charge of his first match as United boss last weekend, overseeing a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Despite failing to clinch a win on his first outing, there were some positives to take from the display. Indeed, Amorim wasted no time in implementing his favoured 3-4-3 formation.
He later warned fans that things will get much worse before they eventually get better.
Nani spoke to A Bola and insisted that United will ultimately reap the benefits of appointing Amorim as their new gaffer. However, according to the 38-year-old Estrela da Amadora forward, this will only happen if the players match Amorim’s high expectations.
“It’s always difficult to say who the right man is, but I really believe he will do a good job. But it doesn’t just depend on him and what he will bring to the club.”
“It also depends on whether the people who will work with him will be prepared for the demands, to return to being winners. But I believe he will be successful at the club, as he has already shown at Sporting.”
“Of course, it’s not just a matter of arriving and changing players overnight, I think it takes time. He will work hard and will show that he was a good appointment.”
Nani admitted that Amorim’s departure makes things a bit difficult for Sporting, who must now adapt to a new way of life without the 39-year-old tactician.
“It is not very fair to talk about Sporting now. Sporting has been having an excellent season, has shown excellent football, and has excellent players. It is a very consistent structure and they know what they are doing.”
“Of course it is a difficult time, because they changed coach, now they have to adapt to a new coach, but I believe that the success will continue and will remain at the club because the foundations are already there. They have the talent and quality to continue.”
United are back in Europa League action in a few hours when they take on Bodo/Glimt. Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
