Manchester City’s ambitions for silverware this season remain intact, but Pep Guardiola must navigate a difficult period as injuries continue to affect his squad. With what the manager has described as “nine finals” left in the Premier League, City find themselves in a battle to secure a top-four finish.
Currently sitting fifth, just a point ahead of Newcastle and Brighton, Guardiola’s side cannot afford any more slip-ups. While injuries alone may not fully explain their struggles this season, the absences of key players have undoubtedly made life more difficult.
As City prepare for the defining weeks of the campaign, here’s the latest on the injury status of Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ederson and others.
Bernardo Silva’s substitution against Brighton raised concerns, with Guardiola revealing that the Portuguese midfielder “couldn’t move properly” after coming on. Rather than risk aggravating any potential injury, the manager opted to take him off.
“I was seeing Bernardo couldn’t walk properly,” Guardiola explained. “Don’t take a risk.”

At this stage, there is no confirmed timeline for Silva’s return, leaving City fans waiting anxiously for further updates. Given his influence in midfield, his availability in the coming weeks could be crucial.
Potential return date: Unknown
Rodri has been a vital cog in Guardiola’s midfield, and his absence due to knee surgery in September has been felt throughout the season. The Spaniard has started training in some capacity, but City are understandably taking a cautious approach to his return.
“I could not expect before (him to return) but maybe before the end of the season – not even the (Club) World Cup – in the Premier League, maybe, it’s going to happen,” Guardiola said, offering a glimmer of hope that he could feature before the campaign concludes.
City will not want to rush him back, given the severity of his ACL injury, but his return—whenever it comes—would be a massive boost in the title and top-four race.
Potential return date: Unknown
The absence of first-choice goalkeeper Ederson was felt against Brighton, with Guardiola confirming the Brazilian shot-stopper is dealing with an abdominal issue.
“He had something abdominal,” Guardiola said. “Niggles. He had a problem at Forest. I hope [he will be back after the international break].”

While the injury is not believed to be serious, City will be eager to have Ederson back between the sticks as soon as possible, particularly given the intensity of the fixtures ahead.
Potential return date: April 2025
There was significant excitement around Oscar Bobb before the season began, following his impressive performances at the tail end of the previous campaign. However, a broken leg before the start of the season ruled him out for the long term.
Encouragingly, the young Norwegian is now back in training, raising hopes of a return before the campaign’s conclusion. Guardiola provided an update on his progress, stating:
“He’s training now regularly, he feels really, really better. He played a friendly game with the second team to see how, because he has to be on the pitch in the training sessions.”

While there is no firm return date, the possibility of Bobb featuring before the end of the season remains.
Potential return date: April/May 2025
City’s defensive options have also been severely impacted, with Manuel Akanji, John Stones and Nathan Ake all out of action.

While injuries have undoubtedly disrupted Guardiola’s plans, City must now rally to secure a top-four finish and challenge for silverware. The return of key players like Rodri, Silva and Ederson will be crucial in determining how their season unfolds.
With every remaining fixture carrying significant weight, Guardiola will hope his squad can cope with the current setbacks and finish the campaign strongly.
