Manchester City will look to move into the Premier League‘s top four when they host Leicester City on Wednesday at 7:45pm.
Man City (4-3-3): Ederson; Lewis, Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol; Silva, Gonzalez, Gundogan; Savinho, Marmoush, Grealish.
The Citizens go into the midweek round of fixtures in fifth, but they’re only one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Pep Guardiola’s side also have the benefit of playing before or at the same time as their top four rivals, allowing them to put the pressure on.
But Man City are in a bit of rocky form in the league, winning just two of their past six matches. They’ve lost three during that run, drawing one. In fact, Man City go into this game with just one point from their past two league games.
Erling Haaland had to come off injured in Man City’s FA Cup win over Bournemouth, reportedly leaving the ground in a protective boot and on crutches. And the Norwegian has now been ruled out for the foreseeable future, set to see a specialist for his ankle.
Omar Marmoush is the natural replacement, having come on for the Norwegian at the weekend. Oscar Bobb is back in training but this game will probably still be too soon.
There is a question of rotation, though. Man City face Manchester United at the weekend, while Leicester are in the relegation zone. So Guardiola may look to utilise the squad options he does have.
Rico Lewis will be looking for a start having lost the right-back battle to Matheus Nunes, while Nico Gonzalez could come into the midfield.
Up front, Savinho should return to selection, having missed the cup win over Bournemouth due to the birth of his child and may give Phil Foden a rest. Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku will fight it out for the left-wing role.
John Stones and Manuel Akanji are both still a few weeks away from returning, while Man City will hope to have Nathan Ake and Rodri back before the end of the season.
The FA Cup win over Bournemouth at the weekend was Marmoush’s 11th game for Man City since his move from Eintracht Frankfurt in the winter window. He’s scored five goals so far, with four of those coming in the Premier League.
The Egyptian forward has averaged 0.65 goals per 90 minutes for Man City, from 2.98 shots and 1.42 efforts on target. He’s averaged 0.34 Expected Goals per 90 with 0.33 xG on Target — that’s a shot placement ratio of 0.97.
Naturally, his shooting is hurt slightly by the fact that he hasn’t been playing through the middle too often. Looking at his game against Bournemouth, Marmoush has shown that he can do it for Man City.
Marmoush played 29 minutes at the weekend, scoring one goal from two shots — both of which hit the target. No player had more shots on target than Marmoush’s two, level alongside Haaland.
