Nuno Mendes is reported to have changed his stance on a winter transfer to Manchester United and is now learning towards signing a new Paris Saint-Germain contract.

United head coach Ruben Amorim first stressed in November his desire to sign a new left-back in 2025, with links to Mendes growing rapidly in the days that followed.

The 22-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of next season, made his name under Amorim at Sporting CP and was claimed to be keen on an immediate reunion.

PSG, however, have refused to accept defeat in their bid to retain Mendes and French publication L'Equipe state the Ligue 1 giants are close to getting their wish. Indeed, the left-back's representatives now confess their top priority is renew his contract.

Mendes is no longer voicing an interest in a departure behind the scenes, it is alleged, having been impressed with a tactical tweak from manager Luis Enrique that has afforded him more attacking freedom in recent months.

"I see him the same as ever," Enrique told the media on Friday when asked if the speculation had impacted Mendes. "That's more a question to ask him than me. But I see him very well."

United will continue to monitor the situation but are likely to have to pursue other targets. In the meantime, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot will continue to operate on the left in the absence of the perennially injured Luke Shaw, with Amorim operating the wing-back system that he enjoyed great success with Sporting.
