By now it is obvious that the January transfer window is likely to be a critical juncture in Manchester City’s season. Pep Guardiola’s squad has struggled of late and 1 win in 11 games only tells part of the story. The signs are clear to see that Manchester City must make an impact in next month’s transfer window. They cannot afford to stand still or sign players who aren’t at the level required. That much is obvious based on the past two months of football.
As reported yesterday there have been a host of factors that have contributed to Manchester City’s recent poor run. Some of those can be rectified like players returning from injury. Others can not. A host of Manchester City players look like they have fallen off the edge of the proverbial cliff so to speak. While we may get glimpses of their brilliance, the facts are that age has finally caught up to players like Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne to name a few. The January transfer window is a chance for Manchester City to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad and they must get it right.
Several recent big-money signings for the world champions haven’t made the expected impact. Kalvin Phillips and Matheus Nunes immediately come to mind here. Phillips is on loan at Ipswich Town and hasn’t made any impact at Manchester City. Matheus Nunes has had moments this season, but he doesn’t look like a player who can become a first-team regular for Pep Guardiola. Nunes may be a squad player at best. What Manchester City need next month is players who can immediately improve the first team. That has been clear to see over the past 11 games.
There is a lack of quality players between the 24-28 years of age range in Pep Guardiola’s squad. This is the age bracket when generally players are at their peak and at their hungriest. That must be addressed next month. To achieve that the world champions must be aggressive in the market starting next month. The time for them to play nice in the market is over. This poor run of form has gone on to long and the only way to kickstart City’s rebuild is by being aggressive in the market. Manchester City have the funds to spend and it’s time that they did so. It’s as simple as that.
Manchester City must make an impact in the January transfer window. That is almost a non-negotiable if they are turn their stumbling season around. Pep Guardiola needs players who can improve his squad and it’s up to the City board to deliver. That is what is needed next month.
