Carlton Palmer believes Ibrox could be the best destination for Peterborough star Kwame Poku

Scottish giants Rangers reportedly sent scouts to watch in-form Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku last weekend, and Carlton Palmer believes they could have the advantage over the competition from the Championship.

Rangers News have reported that the Gers sent their scouts to watch Poku against Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday, and they were treated to a thrashing as the Ghanaian international took centre stage, with a hat-trick and an assist to help his side cruise to a 6-1 win.

Peterboroughreportedly rebuffed a bid from Luton Town for his services in the summer, but Blackburn Rovers were one of the latest clubs to be linked with a possible move for Poku, as per a report from Alan Nixon in late October via Patreon - that's before a flurry of activity was reported this week in regards to his future.

Now, the latest comes via TBR Football, who report Rangers have been joined by Burnley in their pursuit of the 23-year-old wide forward ahead of the upcoming January transfer window. They have also claimed that Southampton and Ipswich are chasing his signature, as his contract continues to wind down ahead of next summer.

Carlton Palmer's verdict on Kwame Poku's Rangers interest

Ex-England international and EFL pundit Carlton Palmer believes Rangers have two distinct advantages over the competition for his signature, given the size of the club and their ability to agree to a transfer before other English-based sides.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, he said: "Glasgow Rangers are the next club in line and believed to have been watching Peterborough United's talented winger, Kwame Poku.

"It seems like a summer move is on the cards, as his contract situation is that it expires in the summer of 2025.

"Peterborough are not a club who are shy of selling their talent. We've seen players move on for big fees.

"In the summer, they lost players like Harrison Burrows and Ronnie Edwards, who both moved on from London Road to sign for Sheffield United and Southampton respectively.

"One of the other players who was expected to leave was Poku, but he didn't and he stayed, and he is now producing the best form of his career.

"A stunning display this weekend saw him bag a hat-trick, which will no doubt have pleased the admirers watching him from the Premier League, the Championship, and now Rangers.

"He's taken his tally to 17 goal contributions in 17 games this season, with ten goals and seven assists.

"He's 23, and Rangers could jump ahead of the market; they could do a pre-contract in January.

"Blackburn Rovers have been linked a lot recently, but we know Peterborough are renowned for player development and selling players on for big money.

"I think, given his contract situation, you expect him to move on.

"You look at who has left and what they have done. Sammie Szmodics, Jack Taylor, and more are with Premier League sides.

"Ivan Toney was a big profit, and the likes of Brett Assombalonga, Dwight Gayle, and Ryan Bennett over the years as well.

"We know that it's a talent train for Peterborough. There will be no shortage of takers, but, listen, Rangers would be a massive club for him.

"It depends, with his agent and financially, and whatever else, whether he'll go. The Championship is a great place to go and play, but even the Premier League as well.

"But the opportunity to go and play for a club like Glasgow Rangers, and the fact they could sign him on a pre-contract in January might be very favourable to Poku and his agent."

Kwame Poku's season for Peterborough United deserves the attention it is currently getting

There are very few players in form as scintillating as Poku right now, who has picked up the third tier's Player of the Month award for both September and October as a result of his standout showings.

He scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 47 appearances in all competitions during the regular season to help Posh reach the top six last year, but this campaign has taken him to new levels. The 15 league contributions, and 17 in all, have not gone unnoticed.

Rangers of course can offer regular European football under the Ibrox lights, and that is a major attraction for some, but Poku may have his eyes set on a top Championship side who could give him a platform to play in the Premier League sooner rather than later.

Whatever happens though, the least likeliest outcome is that he remains at Peterborough even beyond the end of the January window, given so many clubs are keen to take him away from Darren Ferguson's side.
