Last season’s finalists Olympique Lyonnais will take the advantage back to France in their two-legged tie with Bayern Munich after goals from Tabitha Chawinga and Melchie Dumornay.
Pernille Harder had the first chance of the evening as Bayern surged forward from the first whistle. But it was Lyon who looked like the far more dangerous team. A big chance fell to Tabitha Chawinga after Arianna Caruso’s poor clearance. However, the winger was slow to sort out her feet and the Bayern midfielder quickly recovered from her mistake.
The visitors settled quickly into their usual purview dominating possession and playing patiently out from the back, which invited Bayern to press high. The black shirts swarmed forcing Lyon to work hard to break past their lines. A brilliant exchange between Wendie Renard and Melchie Dumornay saw the latter storm into the box but her shot was blocked by Magdalena Eriksson.
It would take Lyon until the 35th minute to break the deadlock. Linda Sembrant’s sloppy touch as Bayern tried to play out from the back allowed for Chawinga to pick her pocket and then run at Maria Luisa Grohs’ goal. The winger slotted past the goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later, it looked like the floodgates would open for Lyon just before the half-time whistle when Ellie Carpenter was brought down in a sloppy challenge by the Bayern captain Sarah Zadrazil in the box. Lindsey Heaps stepped up to the spot but her shot low and towards the right-hand corner was stopped by a diving save from Grohs.
Bayern came out from the half-time break with renewed vigour. A sloppy pass around the back from Lyon saw Harder release her teammate Klara Bühl into space. However, the winger’s shot was left wanting and Lyon’s mistake unpunished. Despite this, Lyon still looked to dominate the chances.
It would take another big block from Grohs to keep the deficit narrow when she denied a close-quarters shot from Kadidiatou Diani. However, there was little the keeper could do to stop Lyon from eventually finding their second. Heaps plucked a header from Dumornay out of the air before rolling the ball back to her teammate who fired home.
Bayern’s best chance of the evening would come late into proceedings when Harder fired towards goal, but even that would be denied as Renard blocked the effort from troubling Christiane Endler’s goal. In truth, it had largely been a comfortable evening for the Chilean who had only suffered one shot on target.
