Mats Hummels came ever so close to moving to the English Premier League after leaving Borussia Dortmund this past summer.
The season so far has certainly not gone according to plan for Mats Hummels, who joined AS Roma after his exit from Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season. The legendary centre-back has made just two substitute appearances for the Italian side, and especially struggled for playing time under now sacked manager Ivan Jurić.
While Hummels will hope his fortunes change under new manager Claudio Ranieri, he nearly moved to the English Premier League in the summer.
According to SportBILD, Brighton & Hove Albion wanted to sign Hummels and his father also visited the club for talks. The magazine adds that the centre-back had even completed his medical tests for Brighton in Munich. However, the transfer did not go through and he ended up joining AS Roma a few days later.
Brighton's interest in signing Hummels has also been confirmed by manager Fabian Hürzeler, who hailed the 35 year old as a "winner" during his appearance on the Phrasenmäher podcast by BILD.
"Mats Hummels' numbers were very, very good. Top 10 of all central defenders worldwide. So of course we were interested and there were talks. Tony [Bloom] was also totally convinced by the data."
Mats Hummels left Borussia Dortmund in the summer after his contract with the club expired. The 2014 World Cup winner played a crucial role in BVB's run to the UEFA Champions League final last season, and made a total of 508 appearances for the club.
