“Maybe it was time for a change” – Ancelotti reflects on Real Madrid exit reason before Brazil job | OneFootball

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that his six-year journey as Real Madrid manager will end on 25 May, the day before he officially begins his new role as Brazil’s head coach.

The 65-year-old Italian addressed the media on Tuesday in a measured and reflective press conference, stating that he wants to see out his time at the Bernabeu with dignity and professionalism.

“From the 26th, I will be the Brazil coach and it’s an important challenge,” he said. “But right now, I’m the Real Madrid coach and I want to finish this fantastic adventure well.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation announced Ancelotti’s appointment on Monday, though Madrid have yet to confirm his departure. The outgoing boss insisted there is no tension between the two parties.

“Madrid will release a statement whenever they want. There’s no problem whatsoever,” he said. “I’ve never had problems with this club and I never will. It’s a club that I’ll always keep in my heart.”

Ancelotti admitted that he knew from the day he rejoined the club in 2021 that his time would eventually come to an end, but expressed immense pride over what he achieved.

“If they’d told me I’d win 11 titles in four years, I would’ve signed it in blood,” he said. “It’s been an unforgettable time. Football is like life — something begins and something ends.”

Madrid’s failure to win a trophy this season, including a Champions League quarter-final exit and a seven-point gap behind Barcelona in La Liga, will not overshadow Ancelotti’s legacy. During his two spells at the club, he won three Champions League titles, two La Liga crowns and a host of domestic trophies.

Asked if it was a mutual decision to part ways, he replied: “Maybe it was time for a change, nothing more. The club may need a new impetus. There’s no need to make a drama out of it.”

Xabi Alonso is widely expected to take over from Ancelotti and the Italian had only praise for his potential successor.

“I have a lot of love for Xabi. I don’t have any advice for him — he has all the tools to be a great coach,” he said.

Ancelotti’s final matches in charge of Madrid will be against Mallorca, Sevilla and Real Sociedad. For the veteran manager, it is the final chapter of a memorable second spell.

“I’ve given everything and I’ve received so much in return,” he said. “Now, it’s time for a new adventure.”
