Pep Guardiola joked that he did not expect calls for him to be sacked from the Liverpool fans after holding up six fingers in reference to his six Premier League titles in response to the criticism.
City were beaten 2-0 at Anfield, their sixth defeat in seven games in all competitions and their fourth Premier League loss in a row.
Guardiola responded to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from the home fans by turning around and holding up six fingers, and asked about his response, he told Sky Sports: “All the stadium wanted to sack me!
“Maybe they’re right, maybe I should be sacked for the results that we have.
“But I didn’t expect it at Anfield. At 1-0 they didn’t do it but at 2-0 they did.
“Maybe they should do it in the past, sing that song in the past not now. Now is taking advantage.
“I didn’t expect it from the people of Liverpool but it’s fine, it’s part of the game, I understand it completely and accept it.
“We had incredible battles together where we won, they won, and I have a respect.”
The defeat sees City slip to 11 points behind Liverpool and asked if his side’s hopes of a fifth title in a row are over, he said: “I said before the game that we are not in the position with the results we are getting to think about big targets but the season is long and we have to try to make a result.
“Some players will come back and after everything will be better, we believe, maybe I don’t know, but we are going to fight and try.”
