West Ham last night appointed former Chelsea manager Graham Potter to try and save their season, and their next move is to try and strengthen their squad this month.
There are two Chelsea players the Hammers are being linked with by the well connected Ben Jacobs – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Both are talented attacking number 8s who simply don’t have a role in the Chelsea squad at the moment. Chukwuemeka was up for sale in the summer, but no buyer was found, while Dewsbury-Hall only joined in the summer, but has played so little that there’s already pretty convincing stories that he’s up for sale too.
The Chelsea squad has an excess of attacking midfielders, and could easily lose both without being weakened. Cesare Casadei is another player in a similar situation, although he has more interest from Serie A.

Potter knows Chukwuemeka a little from their shared time at Chelsea, while Dewsbury-Hall definitely looks like the sort of player who could help the Hammers as they try to find some form after a bad start to the season.
If they’re willing to spend money, Chukwuemeka could be bought for not much over £20m we’d image. There are also some reports that Chelsea would consider a loan deal for him. Dewsbury-Hall is also potentially available for loan.
While there’s absolutely nothing advanced in these links – Potter was only confirmed in the job yesterday – there is plenty of reason to think that at least one of these moves will be seriously considered by Chelsea. We know they’re keen to get rid of Chukwuemeka, and increasingly the same seems to be true of KHD too. West Ham are willing buyers – if we can agree a price, either or both could go this month.
