With the January transfer window now open, Paris Saint-Germain have an opportunity to offload players who no longer fit into their plans, and Marco Asensio appears to be one of them.

Since November 30, the former Real Madrid star has seen his role diminish significantly. He’s lost his place in the starting lineup and has barely featured as a substitute. His only playing time since then came on December 6, when he logged just 11 minutes against AJ Auxerre.

Asensio stayed on the bench for three of PSG’s last four Ligue 1 matches in 2024 and was left out of the squad entirely for the Coupe de France Round of 64 clash against RC Lens.

He was also an unused substitute in the Trophée des Champions against AS Monaco. These signs point to an increasingly uncertain future for Asensio at the club, with a departure looking more likely.

Le Parisien’s Marc Mechenoua reports that, in addition to interest from Aston Villa, Asensio has other options available. While PSG have not clearly opened the door for his departure, Asensio is seeking more playing time.

Meanwhile, it has been reported by RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins that Aston Villa are monitoring Marco Asensio as a potential target for the January transfer window.

Although discussions have not focused on a direct swap involving Asensio and Jhon Durán, the mutual interest between the two clubs could help PSG negotiate a reduced fee for Durán.

Last month, a report claimed that Asensio is considering whether to stay at PSG until the summer or make a move this winter. He has reportedly attracted interest from clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Lyon, Aston Villa, Newcastle, MLS, and teams in Asia.

The 28-year-old has appeared in 46 matches across all competitions for PSG since joining the Ligue 1 side in 2023, scoring seven goals and recording 11 assists. Transfermarkt puts the attacking players’ transfer value at €20 million.
