Newcastle are reportedly targeting Borussia Dortmund star Gregor Kobel as their long-term No.1, with a summer move now under serious consideration.
Newcastle United are wasting no time. With five games still left in the Premier League season, the club is already moving swiftly to get their transfer plans in order for 2025–26.
Right wing. Centre back. Midfield depth. All will need to be addressed.
But goalkeeper? That has now emerged as another top priority—with reports in Europe linking the Magpies to a Champions League finalist and one of the most consistent shot-stoppers on the continent.
As per the journalist Santi Aouna from Foot Mercato on X, Newcastle are showing strong interest in Gregor Kobel, the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, ahead of the summer window.
The 27-year-old could leave the Bundesliga giants. Newcastle and Chelsea have already contacted his entourage, with talks expected to continue in the coming days in London.
Kobel has been one of Dortmund’s standout players over the past two years. His heroics helped take the German side all the way to the Champions League final in 2024—a run that included two clean sheets against Newcastle during the group stage.
The report adds that Dortmund have already moved on, having signed Diant Ramaj from Ajax in the January window. That move is now seen as a precursor to Kobel’s departure.
This could be a rare opportunity for Newcastle to sign a proven Champions League goalkeeper, one who has also replaced Yann Sommer as Switzerland’s No.1.
For much of this season, Newcastle were heavily linked with Burnley’s James Trafford. The young England goalkeeper was considered the frontrunner to succeed Nick Pope at St. James’ Park.
But this latest Newcastle transfer news around Kobel changes the picture.
With Burnley now back in the Premier League and Trafford pushing for a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, his transfer value is rising fast. The Magpies may no longer find that deal straightforward.
Nick Pope and Martin Dúbravka are both now into their 30s, and neither can be counted on for the long-term. Newcastle need a reliable, elite-level goalkeeper who can start for the next five years.
Kobel ticks every box. At 27, he is entering his prime. He has both Champions League and Bundesliga experience along with international exposure with the Swiss national side. And, if talks with his camp progress, Newcastle could make a decisive move soon.
