Remembrance Sunday is always a solemn and well-respected occasion, this time was no different, as on Sunday I observed the two-minute silence outside Tynemouth Club, which is 100 yards from the local cenotaph.
I was standing with 90 year old Davey Brown, a former Chief Officer in the Merchant Navy. He had various personal and nostalgic memorabilia for his seafaring family that he planned to lay later.
Me and Davey were the first ones served in the club and we began discussing the Toon’s 2pm kick-off against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The place soon became chocka with veterans, the lads in uniform proudly wearing their medals and being treated to their customary free pint and a whisky.
Having secured the best table in the building for watching the match, I was soon joined by the McCallister brothers John and Steve, also their brother in law Alan Stewart.
As the drink began flowing and the build up to the match began, the feeling in general was that Newcastle were well capable of dismantling Nuno Espirito Santo’s high flying side.
Team news confirmed that Eddie was starting with the same eleven that had put Arsenal to the sword at St James’ Park eight days earlier.
That was good enough for me as I began settling down for the impending action.
United started the game on the front foot and looked to be in cruise control until a sucker punch from a Forest set-piece.
Nobody I was sitting with complained, everyone seemed confident in our capability to get back into the game.
Early in the second half and we had parity as the Rolls Royce Alexander Isak scored for the fourth game in a row. He seems to love tickling those City Ground nets.
We were now well on top and cometh the moment cometh the man.
Joelinton received the ball on the right and casually bore down on his marker. A quick swivel inside opened up his opportunity and he curled in a sublime left-footed effort from 18 yards.
You could tell by the big man’s reaction that he knew it was going in from the moment it left his boot.
Sandra Tonali then came on and marshaled the midfield alongside Bruno Guimaraes.
Some fine football from the edge of our own box finally saw the ball arrive at the feet of Harvey Barnes on the left.
After cutting inside and measuring up his opportunity, the ball was dispatched into the net with his usual aplomb.
At this rate Harvey lad, you are getting a reputation for being a supersub.
It was now game, set and match and the club was bouncing.
I decided to stay and have a couple more drinks before heading hyem for my dinner, I’m glad I did, because my old mate Ossy Maryani entered the fray.
In the last 40 years I have hardly met anyone as enthusiastic as Ossy when it comes to talking NUFC.
When I eventually got back in the house and settled down, I began contemplating on what had been an excellent day and fine result.
Another international break is upon us and we head into it on the back of two memorable performances.
I don’t want to presume too much at this still relatively early stage, but I have a feeling that United may now have turned a corner, getting back to what we know they are capable of.
