Ipswich Town have been relegated from the Premier League following a 3-0 loss to Newcastle United at St James' Park.
The Tractor Boys' trip to Tyneside started on a dismal note as Ben Johnson was shown two yellow cards before halftime with the match still goalless.
Coming into the match 15 points adrift of safety, Ipswich’s relegation was all but confirmed before kickoff, but Johnson’s bookings for simulation and a cynical foul on Alexander Isak, which came just seven minutes apart, erased any hope that they could wrangle a second season in the top flight.
Newcastle went on to put the tie to bed with professional efficiency. Isak broke the deadlock moments before halftime, scoring from the spot after Jacob Murpy was hauled down in the box by Julio Enciso.

League Cup final hero Dan Burn would double the Magpies’ advantage just ten minutes into the second half, heading home a Kieran Trippier cross, before William Osula would add a knockout blow with ten minutes remaining.
While the loss relegates Ipswich, it preserves Newcastle’s push for European qualification, moving Saturday’s hosts back into third place in the Premier League, leading Man City by one point and Chelsea by two.
Newcastle’s three goals could have been far more. Sandro Tonali hit the woodwork minutes into the second half, and manager Eddie Howe showed little mercy as he brought Anthony Gordon, Callum Wilson and Osula off the bench in the late stages.
The Ipswich players offered their thanks to the away fans at full time with a feeble round of applause, but they ultimately exit the Premier League with a whimper after being tipped as the most likely of the promoted sides to have survived.
But they never ranked higher than 15th this season, and will be relegated alongside fellow promoted sides Leicester and Southampton.
