Nico Williams has emerged as a serious summer target for Real Madrid, with Marca reporting that the club is increasingly convinced of his value both on and off the pitch.

The Athletic Club winger has become a major name within the walls of Valdebebas. Madrid admire his explosive style, youth and commercial appeal and see him as a natural fit for their long-term strategy.

The 22-year-old’s €58 million release clause makes the deal relatively straightforward. That figure, set during his last contract renewal, is considered a bargain for a player viewed as a future star.

Madrid are particularly drawn to Williams’ profile. He is a Spanish international with a growing reputation across Europe. His performances at Euro 2024 and his role in Athletic’s run to the Europa League semi-finals have elevated his standing.

Signing him would also carry symbolic weight. Barcelona were close to securing Williams last summer, but financial constraints forced them to pull out. Madrid now see the opportunity to beat their rivals to one of LaLiga’s brightest homegrown prospects.

There is also a belief at Madrid that the move could partially counterbalance the rise of Lamine Yamal at Barcelona. The club sees Williams as a player capable of generating excitement and media impact comparable to that of the teenage sensation at Camp Nou.

If Madrid choose to trigger the clause, squad reshuffling would likely follow. Rodrygo Goes is reportedly the most at risk of losing his place should Williams arrive.

Discussions at board level are ongoing, but the feeling within the club is increasingly leaning towards action. The question, according to Marca, is no longer whether they are interested, but whether they are ready to make the move now.

Williams is currently nursing a groin issue that has left his involvement in Sunday’s season finale against Barcelona in doubt. If he plays, it could be his final appearance for the Basque club.

Athletic remain hopeful of keeping their star man, but interest from Madrid — as well as from clubs in the Premier League — may prove decisive.

For now, Madrid view the winger as a market opportunity that aligns with their sporting goals and reinforces their domestic identity. The message from the Spanish champions is clear: they believe Williams is worth the leap.
