No step forward today

Goalless draw in Klagenfurt

We created plenty of chances, especially in the second half, as Maximiliano Caufriez, Karim Onisiwo and Yorbe Vertessen made their ADMIRAL Bundesliga debuts - but our boys were not able to claim a win today.

Match summary

In a first-half of few chances, it was the hosts who were able to create more of a goal threat. Cvetko tested Alex Schlager in the opening minutes with a fierce drive from distance (7').

Peter Pacult's side then stepped up and saw most of the early play but were unable to threaten from chances falling to Wernitznig and Mahrer. Our side were able to battle their way into the game with occasional attacks but were not able to break through the hosts' solid defence.

Our boys upped the pressure right at the end of the opening 45 minutes and created two good opportunities. A Capaldo shot was blocked (45+1'), before Hendry Blank had a good header on target from a free-kick - but it was too close to the Klagenfurt goalkeeper to trouble him (45+3').

It looked like Thomas Letsch found the right words in the dressing room at the break, as our boys came back out with increased verve. Karim Onisiwo had a great chance to give us the lead from an inch-perfect cross but sent his header over (48'). Onisiwo then had another opportunity, but his fierce drive wouldn't go in (54').

Our boys continued to create chances with Adam Daghim flashing a drive in after a corner put into the box (57'), before Onisiwo was denied by the Klagenfurt goalie (65'). The Violets offered very little goal threat in the second period, with an effort from Bennetts, who was denied well by Schlager, being the best they could muster (72').

The hosts remained sturdy at the back, however, which Takumu Kawamura got to feel at his cost after leaving the field with a shoulder injury.

Five additional minutes were played, but our boys were not able to secure a last-gasp win despite their best efforts.

The hope was that today's match would kick-start a race up the standings. Our next chance to secure three points comes next Saturday (15 February) when we host TSG Tirol at 17:00 CET in our first Bundesliga home match of the year.

We didn't offer anything in the first half. We were an insecure side, and that wasn't good - we wasted the first 45 minutes. We had a good intensity at the start of the second half, but you just need to get a goal in one way or the other, and we didn't manage that. It wasn't enough to take three points. The only thing that can take us further are successes - and we need to work for them.

The first half wasn't a good watch, as we made lots of simple mistakes and created too few chances. The second half was better, and we had the odd chance or two - but we didn't make use of them. When you let chances and good moments on the break go, then it is difficult to win matches.
