Norwich City are going into the summer transfer window without a manager at the moment.

Johannes Hoff Thorup was dismissed with the team unable to compete for a play-off place to the final weekend of the campaign.

The Canaries will be hoping the next manager is able to turn things around and get the club back in contention for a place in the Premier League.

But there will be key issues that need to be addressed if they’re to bridge the gap to the top teams over the summer, regardless of who is appointed to replace the Dane.

Norwich City’s defensive weakness

When asked what the one biggest issue at the club is now, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes highlighted the glaring defensive issues.

He believes the new manager will have to work on making the side harder to beat, and he is hopeful that players like Angus Gunn and Jacob Sorensen leaving will open the door to improving the squad.

“I think the one biggest issue that we have is letting in too many goals, and dropping points from winning positions,” Downes told Football League World.

“I don’t know how we fix that, that’s something that comes with players being more confident, a style of play that’s more resolute and solid.

“It also comes with letting players leave that maybe aren’t up to scratch or maybe they have downed tools a little bit, as they did under Thorup.

“Or it could be that they used players that haven’t had enough experience, but also it’s not those guys that have been making the mistakes that have led to goals, really.

“I would say once we let go of players that maybe aren’t up to scratch, like we already have done with Gunn, Sorensen and [Onel] Hernandez, and then we hopefully strengthen in those positions.

“And with our new manager, whoever that is, they need to work on being harder to beat, because it’s actually terrible how easy it was for other teams to score against us for a lot of this season.

“So that is definitely the thing that needs to change, because we have the players to score goals and make things happen.

“Obviously that’s until players leave, but as it is now it’s definitely the one main glaring issue that I would want them to work on over the summer.”

Norwich are currently 14th in the Championship table, and will close out the campaign with a home clash against Cardiff City on 3 May.

Next Norwich manager has a lot of work to do this summer

Norwich had one of the best attacks in the Championship this season, but were nowhere near the play-offs for a finish.

The likes of Borja Sainz and Josh Sargent are two of the best players in the division in their respective positions, but defensive issues have let the club down.

The next Norwich manager will have a lot of work on their hands to fix these issues, and they absolutely have to be addressed given the uncertainty over Sainz and Sargent’s futures.

A more defensively resolute coach will help, but it’s clear that improvements are needed in the squad as well.
