Andy Reid has tipped Coventry City to emulate Nottingham Forest's 2021-22 success.
Nottingham Forest legend Andy Reid has tipped Frank Lampard's Coventry City to emulate Nottingham Forest's 2022 run, which ended in success at Wembley.
Coventry have been in wonderful form since Lampard arrived at the CBS Arena in late November last year. The club were sitting in 17th place in the Championship when he was appointed, but have since risen to 7th and just one point outside the play-offs.
With the race for the final two play-off places wide open, Nottingham Forest legend Reid has predicted that the Sky Blues could emulate what his Reds achieved just three years ago.
In an interview with BBC's Football Daily podcast, the former defender believes the run Coventry find themselves on is similar to what Steve Cooper's Forest did in the season they won promotion.
Before the change of management earlier in the season, the Sky Blues struggled to find consistency, which ultimately led to the extremely tough decision of sacking Mark Robins. However, any bad feelings about the legendary manager's dismissal will be buried now, as his successor has got the club back to where they want to be.
This was a similar story for Nottingham Forest, who started the 2021-22 campaign disastrously under Chris Hughton, before Steve Cooper came in and guided the club to promotion via the play-offs. Reid told BBC Football Daily that he believes this season for Coventry bares a striking resemblance to Forest's 2021-22 triumph.
The 42-year-old said: "Coventry are the ones you look at, and they've put themselves in with a great chance because of how quickly the games come, where you can gather the momentum and fire up that league quickly.
"The timing of the run is key, like Nottingham Forest did a few years ago where you get into the play-offs with a good bit of form.
"There is so much to be said for going into the play-offs where you've won six games on the bounce, and you are battle-hardened."
It's fair to say that when Steve Cooper took over at Nottingham Forest, they were in a much more dire situation than Coventry were when Lampard took the helm. However, Cooper arrived much earlier in the season in comparison to the Chelsea legend.
Despite this, Lampard will be looking to do exactly what Reid has said and completely turn around Coventry's season. There were plenty of questions raised when the ex-midfielder was appointed, but Lampard has certainly silenced those critics with his performance thus far.
Replacing a legend like Robins was always going to be tough, but the former Everton boss has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and is proving to be an excellent appointment by Doug King. Whilst Robins' legacy will remain embedded in Sky Blues history forever, Lampard looks to be the man to take the club to the next level.
Having seen from the evidence displayed by Forest that it's possible to still win promotion after a rocky start to the season, Lampard can use this and the much-improved league position Coventry are in now to try and bring a fairytale ending to a season that started off on the wrong foot.
