Two transactions involving Bundesliga side Augsburg were confirmed on transfer deadline day. Defender Patric Pfeiffer is headed back to Germany after switching loan locales. The 25-year-old moves from Switzerland’s Young Boys to 2. Bundesliga side Magdeburg. FCA midfielder Tim Breithaupt, meanwhile, was also shipped to the German second division via a loan deal with Kaiserslautern.
Pfeiffer constituted one of Augsburg’s premier signings ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The Fuggerstädter snatched both Pfeiffer and his club teammate Philipp Tietz away from the newly promoted Darmstadt. Whereas Tietz was eventually able to gain a foothold as an Augsburg striker, Pfeiffer only made four starts early in the season before falling out of favour with head coach Jess Thorup.
During his loan spell in the Swiss capital, Pfeiffer ended up making only two brief relief appearances. Scant minutes of action off the bench in the league and Champions League proved insufficient for the former Germany U19 international. The decision was thus made to reunite him with Magdeburg trainer Christian Titz, under whom he worked whilst playing for Hamburg reserves.
Breithaupt joined Augsburg in January 2023 from German second division side Karlsruher. The defensive-midfielder made a total of 18 top flight appearances over the past two years. The 22-year-old drew special praise from Thorup after seizing a surprise opportunity as a starter in a matchday 29 victory over Union Berlin last spring, yet went unused after mixed results in starts during this season’s first two match-days.
Breithaupt was unable to assert himself against Kristijan Jakic in the fight for a starting place in deep midfield. The former KSC man now heads to one of his previous club’s fiercest rivals, hoping to replicate the success he enjoyed in Baden-Württemberg’s “Fächerstadt”. Breithaupt made a total of 57 2. Bundesliga appearances whilst in Karlsruhe.
“I’m happy that Patric is playing for us with immediate effect,” Madeburg trainer Titz noted in a statement welcoming back his former player. “I still know him from the time we spent together in Hamburg. He is a complete central defender with his abilities and height.”
“I’d like to thank those in charge [at Augsburg] for making this loan possible,” Breithaupt said of his move. “[Lautern] play good football and are an ambitious club. My goal is to return to Augsburg stronger this summer.“
