Chelsea have finally announced the sale of Cesare Casadei is complete on their official website.

The midfielder has completed a loan move to Torino in Serie A. The official announcement has no details on the move, but according to the piece by Simon Johnson in the Athletic yesterday, the sums are as follows.

Chelsea will get €15m cash up front – that’s a long way off the €25m they started the window demanding. They also had to cave on their demands for a 34-40% sell on clause. It’s believed they’ve ended up with just 25%.

There had been some interest from other teams as Torino negotiated, and at one point Lazio looked like heavy favourites to sign the former Inter man, who was signed in the summer of 2022 for €15m.

Some La Liga teams and Porto were also linked, although Casadei himself always seemed to favour a return to Serie A. Casadei was just finding his feet on loan at Leicester a year ago when he was recalled to back up the first team – we wonder how things would have been different had he stayed there.

Chelsea fail to profit from Casadei on the scale they hoped

Cesare Casadei signs his Torino contract.

You can’t quite call Casadei’s move to Chelsea a failure because the club are potentially getting more back for him than they paid. But it’s still ultimately been a bit of a waste of time, energy, squad space and loan slots to farm him out for two and a half years and then get back what we paid for him.

You can’t win them all, and the nature of this “player trading” is that it’s a gamble – but this is not one that really paid off, let’s face it. Casadei could have a bright future in Serie A, and all we can hope now is that that sell on fee ends up being nice and juicy.
