The first ever Thomas Tuchel England squad prompted many headlines, towards the top end of those headlines were conversations about Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The Newcastle United and Arsenal defenders getting their first ever call-ups.

It seems a long long time ago that this England squad was announced (see below) but on checking, it was only four days ago. For Newcastle United fans this feels like another life after the weekend!

Myles Lewis-Skelly followed Friday’s England call-up with a start for Arsenal on Sunday against Chelsea, playing the full game as the Gunners defeated Chelsea. Arsenal surely now certainties for Champions League qualification and at the same time giving Newcastle United a major boost in that respect.

For Dan Burn, what can you say?

The big lad from Blyth celebrating his England call-up with the brilliant opening goal and man of the match, as Newcastle United dominated against Liverpool and the scousers very much flattered by the 2-1 losing scoreline.

With so many journalists, pundits and rival fans so disrespectful about the Dan Burn England call-up, patronising at best, a penny for Thomas Tuchel’s thoughts as he watched the Newcastle United defender put in an epic performance at Wembley.

I think ‘inspired’ is the word the mockers, the doubters, should now be looking for, both in terms of describing that Dan Burn performance on Sunday AND the decision by Thomas Tuchel to include the Newcastle defender in his first England squad.

I have really enjoyed seeing the official video clips released by the England set-up, featuring Dan Burn.

He is clearly relishing every second and looks totally at home there, which of course should be the case.

Dan Burn has been brilliant these past few years and as Sunday showed, he has arguably never been better than he is now, even though set to turn 33 in May, 34 by the time the next World Cup comes around…

Anyway, the latest England video clip (see below) has shown them highlighting the two new boys to the squad.

Also having a bit of fun with the respective heights of Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly:

When it comes to size, the Arsenal defender isn’t actually that small, it is just the fact that Dan Burn is 6ft 7 (201 centimetres) and Myles Lewis-Skelly 5ft 10 (178 centimetres). Back in the day, Ryan Fraser did at least have one use, as there was plenty of amusement to be had by the media and players themselves, purposefully getting Dan Burn at 6 ft 7 (201 centimetres) to stand next to Ryan Fraser at 5ft 4 (163 centimetres).

Talking of amusement…

On Sunday, our amusement overflowed as Newcastle United fans, with Arne Slot having Alexis Mac Allister at 5ft 9 (176 centimetres) ‘marking’ Dan Burn (6ft 7, 201 centimetres) at set-pieces.

So does size really matter?

You bet it does!

The England squad (see below) was announced at 9am on Friday morning – Official announcement from The FA:

‘England head coach Thomas Tuchel has named his squad for March’s FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

The Three Lions kick-off their new campaign with a Wembley double-header as they target a place at next year’s World Cup Finals in USA, Canada and Mexico.

And Tuchel has made his first England selection with 26 players set to report to St. George’s Park early next week to begin their preparations under the new regime.

Among the group, there is a first England call-up for Newcastle United defender Dan Burn while Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly is in the senior squad for the first time having previously represented the Young Lions at MU19, MU18 and MU17 level in recent years. There are also recalls to the squad for Jordan Henderson, Marcus Rashford and Reece James.

Tuchel’s first game against Albania takes place in front of a sold-out Wembley on Friday 21 March (7.45pm GMT), before England return to the national stadium on Monday 24 March (7.45pm GMT) to play Latvia, and tickets for that game are still on sale.
