On this day in 2015, Sadio Mane broke a Premier League record that had lasted over two decades.
Robbie Fowler’s famous four-minute hat-trick for Liverpool against Arsenal appeared a Premier League record unlikely to be bettered – until it was.
A decade ago, Mane starred as Southampton stunned Aston Villa at St Mary’s, securing his side a 6-1 win and the fastest hat-trick the Premier League has ever seen.
The Senegalese forward was electric in the south coast sunshine. His three goals came within just two minutes and 56 seconds, as the Saints raced into a 3-0 lead inside 16 minutes.
It was 5-1 at half-time after two further goals from Shane Long, with Christian Benteke’s response little consolation. Graziano Pelle’s late volley added a sixth for Southampton, but it was Mane’s lightning-quick treble that stole the headlines.
It was a sign of things to come from Mane. He joined Liverpool in a £36m deal in 2016 and scored 120 goals in 269 appearances for the Reds.
A key part of Jurgen Klopp’s side, he lifted the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup at Anfield.
Mane was the joint top-scorer in the Premier League in 2018/19, earning a share of the Golden Boot. That season also saw Mane win the first of two African Footballer of the Year awards.
