Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded to questions over his future at the club following the latest setback in an increasingly challenging campaign.
The Catalan coach and his players succumbed to a hugely disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League last week in the latest difficult performance and result across a troublesome season for the club.
Defeats to the likes of Sporting CP, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain in the league phase format of the Champions League resulted in a 22nd place finish and a play-off tie with Real Madrid for a place in the last-16.
And the gulf in quality between the two clubs showed across both legs as Los Blancos came from behind to win 2-3 at the Etihad Stadium, before a Kylian Mbappe hat-trick handed out a 3-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu for Manchester City.
City’s exit from European competition now leaves them with just one chance at silverware this campaign as they taken on Plymouth Argyle in the fifth round of the FA Cup, with a top-four finish in the Premier League being the main goal for the club in the final months.
Speaking in the aftermath of Manchester City’s damning exit from Europe’s premier club competition, Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium was quizzed by the media, and particularly whether he wants to remain as head coach.
“Yes. Yes. Yes… I want to continue at Manchester City,” Guardiola responded without hesitation during an exchange with Spanish media.
Matters had not got any better for Pep Guardiola in the aftermath of such comments however, as his side fell to a 0-2 home defeat to Liverpool just days later, increasing the gap to the Merseyside club to 20 points.
Arne Slot’s side are expected to claim their first Premier League title since the Covid-hit 2019/20 campaign, and in the process end Manchester City’s run of four successive English top-flight titles.
Next up for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City is a trip to North London to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the reverse fixture between the two clubs, after Ange Postecoglou’s side inflicted a 0-4 scoreline upon the reigning Champions at the Etihad Stadium earlier this campaign.
