Manchester City have announced Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year agreement with the club, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2027.
The new agreement with the Catalan coach brings an end to a period of extended uncertainty over his future, with his previous deal – signed partway through the historic Treble-winning season of 2022/23 – expiring at the end of the ongoing campaign.
The fresh terms shaken upon by the two parties also ends speculation surrounding Manchester City and conversations over a long-term successor to Guardiola, with various reports connecting the club to the likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Girona’s Michel.
Pep Guardiola’s latest deal means that he will remain in charge of the four-time successive Premier League champions for over a decade, having first joined the club in the summer of 2016 following hugely successful spells with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Speaking upon the announcement of his new contract, Pep Guardiola said, “Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club.”
The 53-year-old continued, “That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons. Thank you to everyone for continuing to trust and support me – The Owner, The Chairman Khaldoon, Ferran, Txiki, the players and of course the fans… everyone connected to Manchester City. It has always been an honour, a pleasure and a privilege to be here.
“I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much. Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.”
Offering their thoughts on the breakthrough with the club’s greatest-ever manager, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said, “Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue; allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the landscape of the game.
Al Mubarak continued, “His hunger for improvement and success remains insatiable and the direct beneficiaries of that will continue to be our players and coaching staff, the culture of our Club, and the English game at large.”
“This renewal will take Pep beyond a decade of coaching Manchester City and the opportunity to continue to re-write the managerial record books.”
Pep Guardiola’s next immediate challenge in light of his Manchester City contract extension will see the club take on Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, as Premier League action returns following the final international break of 2024.
