UEFA Champions League, Round of 16, 12/03/25
Lille OSC’s European dream came crashing down at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy as Borussia Dortmund defeated them 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate). Les Dogues scored early thanks to Jonathan David while Lucas Chevalier’s goalline heroics fuelled belief, but a second half collapse saw Lille’s hard work dissipate as last season’s Champions League finalists made a date with Barcelona.
It would take five minutes for Lille to take the lead. Tenacious defending from Ismaily harried Karim Adeyemi off the ball before Ayyoub Bouaddi sent his teammate flying forward. The fullback hasn’t the same pace he once had but he strode from the halfway line into the box. From there he spotted Jonathan David, a simple pass found the striker who shot in between the legs of the goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
The poor goalkeeping was only compounded by the efforts of Lucas Chevalier in the opposite goal. Dortmund had a short period where they threw everything they had at the Lille goal, but Chevalier allowed nothing past. Personified by a hectic and heroic Dortmund corner in the 20th minute, which resulted in him making three last gasp saves to somehow keep the visitors scoreless.
Lille survived the scare and came out the other side. The hosts took the sting out of the game and created some promising attacks. Benjamin André came close to doubling the score when Hákon Arnar Haraldsson’s inch-perfect cross found him in the box. However, the captain could only glance his header wide.
The second half saw Dortmund level the scores. Serhou Guirassy (who had been top scorer in the Champions League until Raphinha’s double yesterday evening) strode into the box where he was softly pushed by Thomas Meunier in the back. It seemed a light decision, but it was one the fullback had allowed the referee to make. Emre Can stepped up to spot and fired down the middle, leaving Chevalier diving off to the side.
Lille wilted as Dortmund stepped up the pressure sensing blood in the water. Guirassy was once again involved as he set up Maximilian Beier. The winger turned Bafodé Diakité and left the centre-back scrambling to defend a brilliant shot. The net rippled and Dortmund were 2-1 up on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.
It was Lille’s turn to throw themselves at Kobel. However, after his early mistake, the Swiss keeper was far more assured. A well worked ball from Haraldsson found David shooting from an awkward position, but his effort was poked directly into the arms of the ready goalkeeper. There was to be no final miracle for a team that had managed to make them look routine during this wonderful European campaign. Lille were out.
Lucas Chevalier – 7
The star of the night for the French side. His efforts in the first half almost looked like they had vanquished Dortmund’s belief. However, the goalkeeper could only do so much when the floodgates finally opened and Dortmund earned the goals that they had thus far been denied.
Ismaily – 6
Great effort for the first goal and defensively he looked solid. The danger for Dortmund came down the opposite side as the Bundesliga team found joy attacking the right of Lille’s defence. The problem for Ismaily was that at 35-years-old he no longer looks like he has the legs to play the full ninety against this quick and aggressive Dortmund side. Replaced midway through the second half by Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Alexsandro – 6
Bafodé Diakité – 4
Thomas Meunier – 4
Ayyoub Bouaddi – 4
Replaced late in the second half by Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Benjamin André – 6
Ngal’ayel Mukau – 5
Replaced late in the second half by André Gomes.
Hákon Arnar Haraldsson – 6
The Icelandic international has come on leaps and bounds this season after recovering from a significant injury at the start of this campaign. He looks completely comfortable as the main creator in this side and it was a matter of inches that his passes did not result in an assist. Replaced late in the second half by Osame Sahraoui.
Jonathan David – 6
Rémy Cabella – 5
Replaced midway through the second half by Chuba Akpom.
Gregor Kobel – 5
Maximilian Beier – 6
Serhou Guirassy – 8
