RB Leipzig put a dent in Bayer Leverkusen’s title defence to secure a draw after coming from 2-0 down, meaning Xabi Alonso’s side fall six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
A game that was played at a ferocious intensity throughout, Patrik Schick opened the scoring inside 20 minutes with his eighth Bundesliga goal in his last five games. Aleix Garcia then doubled Die Werkself’s lead after 36 minutes with Florian Wirtz registering his second assist of the game – unfortunately with Julian Nagelsmann in attendance, he was unable to find the net despite hitting the post on three occasions.
David Raum and RB Leipzig were furious after Leverkusen didn’t put the ball out of play for their second, but Leipzig themselves had an opportunity to do so. But Raum brought his side to within one after his free-kick was deflected via Piero Hincapie just before the break.
Xavi Simons would then put in a superb ball which was met by the head of Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, scoring an own goal with six minutes remaining. Two-nil down, Leipzig fought magnificently to rescue a point for Marco Rose’s side, keeping them within grasp of a Champions League position after hitting a rough patch of late.
