Ange Postecoglou claimed some people “fear” Tottenham winning a trophy and are “trying to tear down and diminish” the possibility of that happening after his side reached the final of the Europa League.

Spurs beat Bodo/Glimt 2-0 in Norway to secure a 5-1 aggregate win thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro.

It means they will face Premier League rivals Manchester United in Bilbao with a place in next season’s Champions League also at stake.

But asked about United boss Ruben Amorim’s assessment that winning the competition would not save his side’s poor Premier League season, and whether it would do so for Tottenham who have also endured a disastrous domestic campaign, Postecoglou responded: “I don’t care. What do I care what Man United think? Why is that relevant to me? Ask the Manchester United manager why he says that.

“Me? I’ve said all along that this is important.

“You know better than me, you follow this club more than I have. What do you think a trophy would do for this club?

“The question answers itself. What’s happening right now is people are fearing that it might actually happen and because it might happen, let’s see how we can tear it down somehow and diminish it somehow by saying that it’s been a poor season and we don’t deserve this or don’t deserve that or somehow comparing us to Manchester United.

“Maybe if we had Manchester United’s success, maybe I’d have a different view.

“I could have been sitting here in fifth position and I’d guarantee that the commentary around me would be ‘well that’s great Ange but this club needs to win something’.

“That’s exactly what everyone would be saying.

“So of course it’s massive. Of course it is. You have to frame it against what this club has been through in the last 15, 20 years and what the supporters have been through.

“Man Utd have got their own journey to go on and maybe if they go 15 years without winning something they’ll change their perspective on things as well.”
