Is Moises Caicedo the best No.6 in the Premier League right now?
The Chelsea midfielder has won possession 93 times in the Premier League this season, more than any other player. He also ranks pretty well for possessions won in the attacking third this season, with 21.
While some may expect even more from Caicedo due to his price, the Ecuadorean is one of the first names on Enzo Maresca’s team sheet. The midfielder put in another top drawer performance this weekend, one of two Chelsea players to make our Team of the Week.
Liverpool and Bournemouth are also represented twice in the Team of the Week for Gameweek 28 as the Reds took another big step towards the title.
We’ve used our Squawka Score to determine the 11 picks, based on the statistical leaders for metrics relevant to their positions. And as ever, we’ve thrown an honourable mention XI for good measure.
There were five clean sheets across the weekend, but Dean Henderson was the top-performing goalkeeper. On top of his clean sheet for Crystal Palace against Ipswich Town, the Englishman prevented 1.9 goals — more than any other goalkeeper — and made a joint-high seven saves. Six of those saves came from shots inside the box, another joint-high in the league this weekend.
Honourable mention: Andre Onana (78%)
Manchester United‘s wing-back in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal, Noussair Mazraoui was attack-minded with one big chance created, two successful passes into the penalty area and three touches in the opposition box. Defensively, the Moroccan made two interceptions retaining possession and three clearances.
Honourable mention: Trent Alexander-Arnold (68%)
Although Jan Paul van Hecke did score this weekend, the Dutch centre-back’s performance as a whole is deserving of his place in the TOTW. Van Hecke completed six clearances in Brighton and Hove Albion‘s win over Fulham, also blocking two shots and making one interception in his own box. He was reliable on the ball too, with 14 passes into the final third completed and a retention rate of 94.23%.
Honourable mention: Murillo (71%)
Aston Villa kept a clean sheet in their win over Brentford, and Tyrone Mings was a big part of their defence. The Englishman made six clearances and three interceptions retaining possession, one of which was in his own box. He also won three aerial duels and 100% of his ground battles, while winning possession four times in the defensive third.
Honourable mention: Levi Colwill (71%)
Marc Cucurella was the match-winner for Chelsea in their victory over Leicester City on Sunday, scoring the only goal of the game. The Spaniard finds himself in more attacking positions in Maresca’s current system, and it paid off with four touches in the opposition box. But Cucurella also did his bit defensively, with four possessions won in the defensive third, six clearances and just three shots on target against.
Honourable mention: Milos Kerkez (71%)
Although Bournemouth lost a two-goal lead in their draw with Tottenham Hotspur, they looked good. Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring for Bournemouth just before half-time, with one of his two shots on target. The midfielder posted a non-penalty Expected Goals on Target total of 0.68, from 0.45 non-penalty xG. Tavernier also created three chances, completed 11 final third passes and both of his attempted crosses. He chipped in defensively too, making five ball recoveries and winning three tackles.
Honourable mention: Ismaila Sarr (78%)
Also a big part of Chelsea’s win over Leicester was Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorean midfielder has been one of Chelsea’s best players this season, and arguably their most consistent following Cole Palmer’s drop in form. Against Leicester, Caicedo made three interceptions retaining possession, won three tackles, 11 duels and made eight ball recoveries. He also won possession six times in the middle third and won 90.91% of his ground duels, alongside a retention rate of 91.36%.
Honourable mention: Idrissa Gueye (74%)
Andre was on top form in Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ midfield against Everton, proving good on the ball and tough to beat. The Brazilian won an incredible 11 possessions in the middle third and nine duels, alongside 12 ball recoveries. On the ball, Andre boasted a retention rate of 95.65% while completing 97.18% of his open-play passes and 18 accurate forward passes.
Honourable mention: Bruno Guimaraes (74%)
Luis Diaz recorded an intentional assist in Liverpool’s win over Southampton, setting up the Reds’ equaliser just after half-time. That was one of six chances created by the Colombian, which included two big chances. Diaz also completed 28 final third passes, completed one of his two attempted crosses and made two ball recoveries.
Honourable mention: Harvey Barnes (75%)
Darwin Nunez was the man to score Liverpool’s equaliser, setting them up in their way to a 3-1 win. The Uruguayan repaid the faith in his start, with two shots on target totalling 0.84 non-penalty xG. That increased to 1.08 non-penalty xGOT. Nunez had four shots in total and while he did miss two big chances, the Uruguayan also won a penalty to help his side get the victory.
Honourable mention: Joao Pedro (72%)
Evanilson scored Bournemouth’s second in their draw with Tottenham, hitting the target with all three of his shots. He posted 0.88 non-penalty xG and 1.3 non-penalty xGOT, alongside five touches in the opposition box in total. The Brazilian has been growing once again, following his return from injury.
