PSR pawns: Which academy graduates could be sold this summer?

The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules have been criticised for incentivising the sale of academy graduates.
With homegrown players classed as pure profit on the balance sheet, it’s led to clubs cashing in on those nurtured within their academies.
We’ve looked at five players who could be the next names used as pawns in the PSR game. Here are five Premier League academy graduates who could be sold this summer.
Chelsea’s U-turn on Trevoh Chalobah was the latest mishap in a period of mismanagement. Frozen out last summer and not permitted to attend the club’s pre-season tour, Chalobah joined Crystal Palace on loan. Six months later and after a run of impressive performances across the capital, Chalobah was recalled by Chelsea in the midst of their injury issues.
He’s made four league starts since returning to Stamford Bridge but does not appear to be part of the club’s long-term plans. The 25-year-old is unlikely to be short of suitors in the summer, with Chelsea expected to cash in. Given the remarkable – and reckless – spending of the West Londoners in recent transfer windows, a pure profit sale would be welcomed.
Caoimhin Kelleher has been called the best number-two goalkeeper in the Premier League across the last two seasons. The issue for the Irishman is that he wants to be known as a number one.
Alisson Becker’s brilliance and the impending arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia look set to end Kelleher’s time at Anfield. At 26, it’s time for the shot-stopper to take on a new challenge after just 23 league appearances in his club career to date.
Liverpool are set to demand a fee in excess of £30m for the goalkeeper, a big boost to what is already thought to be a significant war chest for Arne Slot to spend. After making just one senior signing last summer, a refresh for the Reds is expected in the summer.
Marcus Rashford’s exit from Manchester United was expected in January, with the forward out of favour under new manager Ruben Amorim. After a disappointing 18 months, Rashford has shown signs of his old self during a loan spell at Aston Villa.
He has four assists across all competitions and has forged an encouraging understanding with fellow recruit Marco Asensio.
A £40m option to make the move permanent was included in the deal. Given Manchester United’s concerning financial situation and the likely absence of Champions League football next season, it’s a sale that could provide Ruben Amorim with much-needed funds.
Kobbie Mainoo is another name who could leave Manchester United. It was revealed last autumn that the Red Devils would consider offers for Mainoo and fellow academy product Alejandro Garnacho as the club sought funds to rebuild.
Mainoo has stalled on signing a new contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to have two years to run in the summer.
Chelsea are actively interested in the 19-year-old, while Real Madrid have been named as suitors of late. Valued at around £70m, the sales of Mainoo and Rashford would significantly increase the money available to spend.
Newcastle are a side who have been critical of PSR, with the Magpies’ investment limited despite boasting the wealthiest owners in club football. Last summer, Newcastle were forced to cash in on the highly-rated Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in order to remain compliant with the divisional rules.
Sean Longstaff could be the next name to leave St James’ Park to ease financial issues. The 27-year-old will enter the final 12 months of his deal in the summer and has lost his place as a starter this season, following Sandro Tonali’s return from suspension.
Though well regarded in the North East, it’s an exit that could make sense if it prevents the need to sell a star name, as top clubs circle for Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes. Everton and Manchester United have been linked.
