Real Madrid have fended off competition from Premier League clubs to complete the signing of Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Spanish giants announced on Saturday that the central defender will join the club at the end of this season on a five-year deal.
Real Madrid activated the £50 million release clause in his Bournemouth contract, which will be paid in three instalments.
A number of top clubs in Europe were keen on signing the 20-year-old, with Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all linked with the youngster.
However, Huijsen reportedly prioritised a move to the Bernabeu this summer and will leave Bournemouth early in order to play at Fifa Club World Cup, which will kick off in the United States in June.
Bournemouth said: “The centre-back, who joined the Cherries from Juventus last summer, has been instrumental in the club’s record-breaking campaign, which has seen Andoni Iraola’s side already break their highest points tally in the Premier League.”
Born in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Huijsen grew up in Spain and came through the youth teams at Malaga as a prospect. He joined Juventus in 2021 and went on to make one senior appearance before impressing on loan at AS Roma under Jose Mourinho in 2023/24.
Bournemouth snapped him up for just £12.6m last summer and it turned out to be one of the smartest transfers of the season. The centre-back has shown great timing in cutting out opposition attacks while also displaying ability on the ball. His performances have earned him his first Spain call-up and a nomination for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Year award.
Huijsen fits the profile of centre-back Real Madrid have been looking for as they look to reinforce their defence ahead of Xabi Alonso’s impending arrival as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement in the dugout.
