Sunday night was nothing but memorable for Real Madrid as they slumped to a 5-2 thrashing at the hands of their arch-rivals Barcelona in the finale of the Spanish Super Cup.

Los Blancos did not look like the better team at any point in the game and were always the ones under pressure. Barring the short period after Kylian Mbappe’s opener, they were chasing Barcelona for the better part of the game.

Truth be told, the scoreline is kind on Carlo Ancelotti’s men for it would have been much worse had Barcelona not been reduced to ten men.

Real Madrid captain shares his thoughts

Luka Modric was the only Real Madrid player who faced the press after the defeat, and understandably so. Sharing his thoughts on the performance, he admitted that it was a harsh result in the dressing room.

“It’s a hard defeat. We have to be together, be a team and get out of this, as we did after the La Liga defeat against them. I hope we will react after this hard defeat because we didn’t think we’d lose like this.”

He then stressed how it was vital for the team to recover from the traumatising night and look ahead to the critical games coming, especially in the Copa del Rey midweek.

“It’s good that the Cup game is coming soon and we don’t have much time to regret it. If you have to choose a final to lose, we prefer to lose this one.”

Modric then owned up and apologised to the fans for the team’s horror show, saying,

“This is football, we are sorry for our fans and for us, we must continue and be united. There is a lot of season left and we want to give a lot of joy to our fans.”

Modric then went on to praise Barcelona for their tenacity and quality in the final, saying,

“We have not played a good game, Barcelona have been better and we must congratulate them. We have to continue in our line because we had a good dynamic in La Liga.”

Finally, Modric accepted that it was not possible to win on all fronts and that he did not read much into the result. Yet, he admitted there was a lot to work on as a team.

“In football, there are defeats and victories, you can’t always win. It’s never nice to lose against this rival, but this is football.”

“We have to congratulate Barcelona, they have played a better game. We have to work and correct what we have done wrong and continue,” he concluded.
