Real Madrid are monitoring the situation of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo ahead of the summer transfer window.
Mainoo’s future with the club is up in the air with negotiations over a new deal having stalled. The 19-year-old will have two years on his contract in the summer and reports last week suggested Mainoo will turn down an extension at Old Trafford.
Mainoo broke into the Manchester United first team last season in a meteoric rise. He made his Premier League debut in November and ended the campaign as a key part of the England team that reached the European Championship final.
Earlier this season, it was revealed that Manchester United would consider the sale of Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho to ease the club’s financial issues. As high-value academy graduates, the sale of the duo would count as complete profit in Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) calculations.
Mainoo’s reluctance to sign a new deal is being monitored with Real Madrid watching developments. Spanish outlet Defensa Central are reporting that the European champions are willing to rival Chelsea in the race to sign the teenager.
England teammate Jude Bellingham has thrived since moving to the Bernabeu, while Real Madrid are also pursuing a deal to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer. Mainoo could be the next Englishman in the club’s sights.
Chelsea expressed interest in signing Mainoo during the January transfer window. The West Londoners were prepared to offer the Red Devils a player-plus-cash deal, with Christopher Nkunku and Carney Chukwuemeka named as potential makeweights. Chelsea remain keen, as the Blues look to improve their midfield depth this summer.
