Fans of SM Caen made it clear on Friday that they are unhappy with the club’s part-owner, Kylian Mbappe, after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Clermont Foot.

During the match, several banners were displayed, expressing their frustrations with the club’s recent management decisions. One banner boldly stated;

“Mbappe, SMC is not your toy,” in reference to the club’s controversial decision to part ways with popular coach Nicolas Seube following a lacklustre first half of the season.

Other banners carried strong messages, with one urging, “Before shining on the world stage, respect the local figures.”

Another pointed out, “Here, legends are made through work and loyalty,” a statement that seems to reflect the fans’ frustration with what they perceive as a lack of respect for the club’s history and its loyal figures.

Mbappe’s ownership in question

Mbappe became a part-owner of Caen in July 2024 when his investment fund purchased an 80% stake in the club from American firm Oaktree Capital.

The French forward’s involvement in the club’s ownership has been met with mixed reactions. The relationship between him and Caen dates back to 2014 when, at just 13 years old, he nearly joined the club before opting to sign with Monaco instead.

Currently, SM Caen is fighting to avoid relegation from Ligue 2, and the recent managerial change has done little to improve their fortunes. Their defeat to Clermont, a direct competitor for relegation, further heightened the tension around the club.

Despite the involvement of Mbappe, who recently joined the executive team, the team’s poor results are overshadowing his presence. \

The fans are clearly frustrated with the direction the club is taking under the new ownership, and they are increasingly voicing their dissatisfaction, demanding respect for the club’s traditions and history.
