After missing out on the Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. will be named the best player in the world at the FIFA The Best awards, which will take place later today in Doha, Qatar, reports GE Globo.
In the process, the 24-year-old forward will join Romario, Ronaldo (a three-time winner), Rivaldo, Ronaldinho (two-time winner), and Kaka as the Brazilian players honoured in the various formats of the FIFA award, which was established in 1991.
Vinicius will also be the first Brazilian to win the Best Player award since 2007.
A Champions League and La Liga winner with Real Madrid, Vinicius was one of the standout players for the Spanish heavyweights during the 2023/24 season. He featured in 39 matches, scoring 24 goals and contributing 11 assists.
Real Madrid are currently in Qatar for the Intercontinental Cup final where they will face Pachuca from Mexico on Wednesday.
As such, Vinicius, who snubbed the Ballon d’Or gala along with the entire Real Madrid contingent, will attend the award ceremony after training with his team on Tuesday.
The Real Madrid attacker finished second in the Ballon d’Or rankings despite being the overwhelming favourite to win. Instead, it was Manchester City midfielder Rodri who walked away with the Golden Orb earlier this year in France.
Thus, FIFA’s The Best award will come as a recognition for the excellent year that the 24-year-old has had with Real Madrid.
