Red Star Belgrade are the dominant force in the Serbian league – but are still big underdogs to Inter Milan tomorrow.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Tomorrow, Inter play their second Champions League match of the season.
The Nerazzurri began their campaign in the competition with an absolutely huge fixture. They drew away to Premier League juggernauts Manchester City.
On paper, Red Star are certainly more manageable opposition.
The Serbian team may be a big name historically. They are previous European Cup winners.
But the reality of the stratification of leagues in Europe means that Red Star have struggled to keep up with the big clubs from the Premier League or Serie A.
As the Gazzetta note, Red Star are still certainly not a team Inter will be underestimating.
The team from Serbia’s capital have been nearly flawless in their domestic league.
Red Star have dropped just two points in the league thus far. They’ve won eight matches and drawn one.
A key player in this success has been Senegalese international striker Cherif Ndiaye. He has scored seven goals to date in the Serbian SuperLiga.
However, there is no guarantee that Ndiaye will start tomorrow.
In Red Star’s Champions League opener, Bruno Duarte got the nod over Ndiaye leading the Serbian club’s line.
Then, in mdifield, there is a familiar face for Inter. Former AC Milan midfielder Rade Krunic is likely to start tomorrow, bringing up plenty of derby memories.
Inter will have watched Red Star’s opener against Benfica.
The Portuguese side won that match in the end. Their European experience and individual quality perhaps proved decisive in the end.
But Red Star were more than competitive. They stayed in the match right until the end.
And Inter will be expecting something similar tomorrow at the San Siro.
