After two disappointing results in a row, Liverpool fans were delivered an unexpected piece of exciting news on Thursday as The Athletic’s Football Correspondent David Ornstein tweeted that the club ‘could consider’ a move for Napoli star Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Transfer window column inches have thus far been dominated by Real Madrid’s pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with LFC insisting that the vice-captain will not be leaving this month. Ornstein’s tweet took many by surprise given the scarcity of credible stories on possible incomings. It had been suggested that the Reds may rekindle their interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi, but no concrete reports have emerged.

As one of the most exciting wingers in European football, it may seem only natural that FSG’s transfer committee are prepared to put on record that they ‘admire’ Kvaratskhelia. The reason this public admiration could prove significant is because such statements are rare. Figures within LFC are more than happy to quash inaccurate transfer links when quizzed by local and national journalists and only tend to respond positively if the player is under serious consideration.

Comparisons have been made with the signing of Luis Díaz – rumours of a potential bid by Spurs in January 2022 forced the club to act early and land their man six months ahead of schedule. Parallels can be drawn given PSG’s rumoured interest in the Georgian. Richard Hughes’ now famous quote that the transfer committee will ‘always be opportunistic if we can’ continues to be cited. Napoli’s apparent willingness to sell the player for a fee significantly smaller than the €120 million previously suggested could represent the kind of opportunity Hughes was referring to. The rumoured fee of around €80 million is still a hefty one but is not beyond the figures Liverpool have been prepared to fork out in the past.

The perception that FSG are forever reluctant to put their hand in their pocket is one reason for scepticism over the transfer. Another is the fact that Kvaratskhelia plays on the left wing, an area of the pitch that appears to be well-stocked at present. Arne Slot has frequently lauded the performances of Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz this season, so it seems unlikely that the club would prioritise bringing in a third high-quality left-sided option. Many fans and pundits believe an addition in defence or defensive midfield would be the best use of resources in the immediate future.

There has also been cynicism from some quarters that the link to ‘Kvaradona’ is merely a distraction from the lack of progress on the three major contract renewals. This would represent a risky strategy given the failed high-profile pursuits of Jude Bellingham and Moisés Caicedo. A third wild goose chase involving a star would further entrench the ill-feeling many hold over the club’s ownership.

A possible reason for optimism is the relatively young age of the player. Kvaratskhelia will be 24 in a month’s time and is within the usual window for LFC targets. He would retain a high transfer value if he were to succeed in a red shirt and could either be sold at a profit or see out his best days on Merseyside. He is already a proven winner, having been instrumental in Napoli winning their third Scudetto in 2023 and will be well remembered on Merseyside for torturing Jürgen Klopp’s Reds in a 4-1 victory.

With a formal bid yet to be placed by any club, LFC’s club shop assistants have been spared the arduous task of printing ‘Kvaratskhelia’ on hundreds of red shirts for now. Fingers crossed they will have to learn the spelling by the end of the month!

Although this potential transfer still feels some way off anything like completion, a player of the Georgian’s quality rarely becomes readily available on the market and therefore the decision makers at Liverpool would be wise to take a closer look at the possibilities.

Hailed as ‘cheeky’ by former Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp in 2022, Kvaratskhelia would be a superb addition to any squad in world football and whilst it would eventually lead to an attacking reshuffle, this would remain a welcome capture.
