Liverpool appear to be at a crossroads with Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan striker, who arrived with much fanfare in 2022 for a staggering £85m from Benfica, has failed to meet expectations. Under Arne Slot’s management, Nunez has struggled to cement his place, falling behind Diogo Jota and now Luis Diaz in the pecking order. With reports linking Nunez to AC Milan and Liverpool’s interest in high-profile replacements like Marcus Thuram and Alexander Isak, it’s clear the club is looking to recalibrate their attacking options.
Despite early promise, Nunez has not adapted to Slot’s tactical system, which demands a sharp, multifaceted striker. His inconsistent performances and an injury-plagued period allowed others like Diaz to flourish. Slot’s dissatisfaction with Nunez was confirmed after the season’s opening months, leading to speculation about his future.
TEAMtalk highlighted: “Liverpool, open to evaluating his possible farewell… are already assessing possible alternatives for June.” This indicates that while a January exit is unlikely, the summer could be pivotal for Nunez’s Anfield career.
Liverpool are reportedly eyeing Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak as potential replacements. Thuram, valued at €85m, represents a more realistic target given Newcastle’s steep asking price for Isak. Thuram’s performances for Inter have been stellar, yet the Italian club may entertain offers close to his release clause to secure a significant profit.

Liverpool seem prepared for a major shake-up in their forward line. As TEAMtalk noted: “Liverpool are understood to believe Inter’s valuation represents fair market value for the Frenchman.” The French international’s versatility and composure could align perfectly with Slot’s vision.

Italian reports recently suggested that AC Milan had tabled a loan-to-buy offer for Nunez, valuing the deal at €50m (£41.5m). However, TEAMtalk revealed there is no confirmation of genuine interest from Milan. While the Rossoneri have other priorities under manager Sergio Conceicao, Liverpool may still entertain bids for Nunez should an enticing offer materialise.
TEAMtalk clarified: “The figures circulated are not in line with the club’s economic strategy… Milan is not considering such an expensive operation.” This underscores that Nunez’s January departure is unlikely, but Liverpool remain open to long-term alternatives.
Liverpool fans are sceptical yet hopeful about the potential changes to their forward line. Nunez’s underwhelming performances have drawn criticism, but there is lingering optimism that he could rediscover his Benfica form under the right circumstances. However, Arne Slot’s lack of faith in him speaks volumes.
Marcus Thuram excites the fanbase. His price tag is reasonable compared to the inflated demands for Alexander Isak. Thuram’s ability to play across the forward line and his proven quality at Inter make him a standout candidate. One fan remarked, “Thuram at Anfield would be a statement – a true mix of power, pace, and technical brilliance.”
As for AC Milan’s links, the scepticism is warranted. The reported loan terms fall significantly below Liverpool’s valuation of Nunez. While Milan’s interest may not materialise, it highlights Liverpool’s willingness to explore avenues to recoup some of their hefty investment.
In essence, the coming months could define Liverpool’s attacking philosophy for years to come. Whether it’s a rejuvenated Nunez, Thuram’s arrival, or a wildcard transfer, fans are eager for clarity and progress.
