Report: Will Liverpool Spend €300M or Is This Just Transfer Speculation

Liverpool are no strangers to ambitious transfer windows, but Fichajes have suggested that the club is preparing to spend €300 million this summer on three high-profile targets—Julián Álvarez, Xavi Simons, and Alessandro Bastoni. While each player would undeniably strengthen the squad, questions must be asked about the feasibility of such a major outlay.
Liverpool’s reported primary target is Julián Álvarez, with Fichajes claiming the club “would be willing to trigger his €150M release clause” at Atlético Madrid. His ability to play across the forward line makes him an exciting prospect for Arne Slot’s system, but does Liverpool really need another versatile attacker?

With Darwin Núñez, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota already competing for starting spots, spending half the budget on Álvarez would be a bold move—especially when other areas of the team need strengthening.
The midfield remains a priority for Liverpool, and Xavi Simons’ name has emerged as a €75M target. Currently excelling at RB Leipzig, his “quality and dynamism would add a creative spark to the team,” according to Fichajes.

Simons fits the mould of a modern midfielder, but concerns persist about his ability to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. Would Liverpool invest so heavily in a player still developing at the highest level?
Perhaps the most realistic of the three targets is Alessandro Bastoni. The Inter Milan centre-back would bring defensive stability to a Liverpool side that has suffered from injury setbacks in recent seasons.
Fichajes suggest “his solidity and ability with the ball fit perfectly with Arne Slot’s philosophy”, making him a natural fit for Liverpool’s style of play. But with Inter unlikely to sell cheaply, securing Bastoni could be a drawn-out and costly process.

Liverpool fans have seen enough transfer speculation over the years to know that this reported €300M splurge is highly unlikely. While there’s no doubt that Álvarez, Simons, and Bastoni would improve the squad, this kind of spending spree does not align with how the club has operated under its current ownership.
Firstly, Liverpool’s financial model prioritises sustainability. Even after player sales, spending €300M in one window would require a shift in the club’s transfer strategy. It seems improbable that the club would break its transfer record for a single signing, let alone three in one summer.
Secondly, does Álvarez even fit into Liverpool’s attack? The club already has depth in forward positions, and if a major attacking signing were to happen, it would likely be a younger player with a lower price tag rather than someone carrying a €150M clause.
Similarly, Simons’ lack of Premier League experience makes his price tag questionable. While he has excelled in Germany, Liverpool have traditionally been cautious about paying premium fees for young midfielders who still have to prove themselves in the English game.
Bastoni is perhaps the most plausible option, but even this would require Liverpool to outbid rival clubs and negotiate with a notoriously difficult seller in Inter Milan.
Ultimately, while Liverpool will strengthen this summer, it’s difficult to see them doing so in the manner described by Fichajes. Fans should expect targeted signings rather than a radical spending spree.
