Earlier this week, Robert Lewandowski became the third player in history – after Cristiano Ronald and Lionel Messi – to reach 100 Champions League goals. His brace against Brest on Tuesday moved him to 101, and he will fancy his chances of racking up several more before he hangs up his boots.

There has been a lot of discussion in recent months about how long Lewandowski has left at the top level, but for legendary Polish footballer Zbigniew Boniek (via MD), there is a good chance he can play long enough to come close to Lionel Messi’s 129 goals in the Champions League.

“It depends a lot on what the team does, but it has a certain peace of mind because it is known that he will play eight games in the league phase. And then there’s the knockout phase. I think Robert can easily reach 120 goals (before he retires). He has at least two more years left playing at this level.”

Lewandowski has made an incredible start to this season, scoring 22 goals in 19 appearances for Barcelona. Because of this, he has emerged as an early contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, although Boniek does not think that challenge will last.

“I think the time when Robert could have won the Ballon d’Or is over. Despite everything, he can have his own reward and score as much as possible because he will go down in history.”
