Andy Robertson has praised Darwin Nunez and said the Liverpool forward took his chance against Bournemouth.

Nunez made his first start of the season as Liverpool won 3-0 against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday. The Uruguay international has been limited to cameo appearances off the bench during the opening weeks of the campaign but returned to the starting XI against the Cherries.

He marked the occasion with a brilliant goal to open his account for the season, cutting inside and bending a left-footed effort into the far corner. It was the highlight of an excellent all-round showing and Robertson was full of praise for his teammate.

The Scotland captain said it was important for Liverpool to bounce back after a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield last weekend.

“Really happy,” Robertson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Obviously last week it was disappointing, but we managed to bounce back Tuesday [against AC Milan] – it was about getting back on track in the league.

“Darwin [Nunez] has had to be patient. He has worked hard in training, trying to get better like we all have.

“He has waited for his chance and today he was excellent.

“Luis [Diaz] has started the season really well, delighted for those two.

“He [Nunez] was waiting for his chance and he took it today.”

Slot says competition good for Liverpool forwards

Liverpool manager Arne Slot discussed the impact Nunez made, after replacing Diogo Jota in the side this weekend. On Nunez’s performance, Slot told BBC MOTD:

“We hope we are adding goals [to his game] because that is what you need from a striker but this work rate was really good. We have a lot of good players, a lot of competition, and as long as they keep performing it is a very good thing for me.”
