Liverpool are flying high this season, both domestically and in Europe. Under the guidance of Arne Slot, the Reds have emerged as a dominant force, excelling in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Sitting five points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League and boasting a perfect record in Europe, the Anfield outfit seems unstoppable. A key figure in their remarkable run has been Ryan Gravenberch, whose transformation under Slot has been pivotal.

Last season, Ryan Gravenberch struggled to make a significant impact under Jurgen Klopp. Injuries and adjustment to English football saw the Netherlands international limited to 12 league starts. However, under Slot’s tutelage, the 22-year-old has flourished. Deployed in a deeper midfield role, he has combined defensive discipline with his natural technical abilities. This campaign, he has been ever-present, starting all 11 Premier League matches and featuring in each of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League fixtures.
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been one of Gravenberch’s most vocal admirers this season. Writing on PremierLeague.com, Shearer remarked: “He’s adapted really well to a slightly more defensive role this season, and his dominance in midfield is a big reason why Liverpool have been so good in both attack and defence.” The former England striker has even included Gravenberch in his Premier League Team of the Season so far, underscoring the Dutchman’s growing reputation.
The turning point in Gravenberch’s Liverpool career can be traced back to his struggles last season. Injury setbacks and the challenge of adapting to the physicality of the Premier League hampered his impact. His older brother, Danzell Gravenberch, reflected on this transformation, telling AD: “It feels like he got sporting revenge just by letting his feet do the talking. That’s Ryan. He’s no longer the nonchalant player people once criticised. If you look at the distances he’s covered, you’ll see the effort and determination he brings to every game.”
Danzell also highlighted Ryan’s maturity, noting that his brother has shed his laid-back demeanour and embraced the work ethic needed to excel at the highest level.
Gravenberch’s resurgence has coincided with Liverpool’s scintillating form. His defensive contributions and ability to dictate play have been instrumental in establishing Liverpool as one of Europe’s top teams this season. With the Netherlands international thriving under Slot, the Reds look set to challenge for silverware on multiple fronts.
