Manchester City are bracing themselves for another significant transfer window off the back of a busy January at the midway stage of a challenging campaign.

Officials working in recruitment departments at the Etihad Stadium deemed it necessary to invest in excess of £170 million during the recent winter market to prevent the club from falling further into a slump across competitions this season.

That action taken by the club came immediately off the back of a torrid run of form across competitions in November and December that largely derailed the club’s Premier League and Champions League ambitions.

Pep Guardiola had previously admitted that he had personally directed the club to look away from a rebuild during the last summer transfer window, believing that his current squad at the time was ready to compete at the very highest level once again.

And if it was not for a string of injuries at crucial points of the season and to some of his most important players, Manchester City may have found themselves in a very different position come this point in the campaign.

But following the season and irrespective of the outcome of the FA Cup Final this month and whether or not City qualify for the UEFA Champions League, officials are ready to invest significantly and welcome in a fresh wave in the club’s development.

According to a new report from The Athletic’s Sam Lee, Manchester City are preparing to bring in four or five new players during the upcoming summer transfer window with a goalkeeper, full-back and creative midfielders among the targets.

It is detailed that ‘progress’ has already been made towards bringing in some of Manchester City’s ‘first choices’ and further meetings have been held this week to finalise their plans ahead of the summer.

Specifically, it is further reinforced that a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is ‘in the works’, while there is ‘keen interest’ from the Etihad Stadium in Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

In the goalkeeper ranks, Manchester City are expected to intensify their pursuit of Porto and Portugal international Diogo Costa, with some reports in Europe suggesting that the 25-year-old has already indicated a desire to make the switch to the Etihad Stadium.

City Xtra hold an understanding that current mainstay Ederson has told those close to him of a desire to bring an end to his illustrious stay in Manchester, with Saudi Arabia his preferred destination following on from interest last summer.

As for the full-back position and City are expected to reignite interest in Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso, having first registered their own interest in the Italian defender during the January transfer window.
