Milan’s campaign is in tatters after defeat to Bologna, as Rafael Leao’s opener was cancelled out by a controversial Santiago Castro equaliser, but they were caught napping on Dan Ndoye’s winner.

This Week 9 fixture was originally set for October 2024 and called off due to flood warnings, but the teams were locked together going in on 41 points. Kyle Walker, Emerson Royal, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Alessandro Florenzi were still out of action, while the hosts missed Emil Holm and Estanis Pedrola following a 2-0 defeat to Parma, their first loss of 2025. Ex-Milan players Davide Calabria and Tommaso Pobega were on the bench.

Santiago Gimenez fired over on a Yunus Musah lay-off after 22 seconds, then moments later Malick Thiaw risked another own goal when deflecting the Benjamin Dominguez pull-back wide.

Musah tested Lukasz Skorupski at the near post and Dan Ndoye drilled wide on the counter-attack, as both teams struggled to deal with the referee letting a lot of challenges go, including timid penalty appeals from Ndoye and Youssouf Fofana.

Dominguez twisted and turned away from Alex Jimenez to force a tricky save out of Mike Maignan at the near post, but Milan took the lead just before half-time.

Maignan’s long ball forward was flicked on by Santiago Gimenez and Rafael Leao sprinted through the centre, dribbling around Skorupski to deposit into an empty net.

Bologna had the ball in the net straight after the restart, as a free kick was knocked down by Lorenzo De Silvestri onto Giovanni Fabbian, the ricochet landing kindly for Santiago Castro to blast in from six yards. Milan expected it to be disallowed for striking Fabbian on the arm, but VAR gave the all-clear.

Musah started a run from his own half, twisted and turned to bemuse Joao Miranda and forced a great Skorupski save at the near post, while Miranda then fired just over the bar from outside the box.

Luka Jovic’s header was weak and straight at Skorupski, but Bologna had a huge double chance when Nicolò Casale’s header thumped the near post after a corner, then Nicolò Cambiaghi fired the rebound inches over the bar.

Moments later, Jimenez was caught napping by a throw-in as Cambiaghi turned him to stand up a cross at the by-line, with Ndoye at full stretch for the tap-in ahead of Strahinja Pavlovic from four yards.
