Serie A Giants Pushing to Sign Liverpool Forward This Summer – Report

When Liverpool secured the services of Federico Chiesa for £12.5 million from Juventus last summer, the move was hailed as one of the bargains of the window. An explosive wide forward, a European Championship winner with Italy, and a player with pedigree across Champions League nights—he arrived at Anfield with an air of excitement and expectation.
Yet, fast forward to April 2025, and the reality has been sobering for the 27-year-old. Chiesa has featured in just 11 matches across all competitions this season. Even more telling is that only three of those came in the Premier League, and he has yet to start a single game under Arne Slot. For a player of his stature, such marginalisation is telling.
His first full 90 minutes in a Liverpool shirt arrived five months after his signing—in a Champions League outing against PSV Eindhoven in January. While Liverpool are flying high at the Premier League summit, Chiesa remains on the fringes, offering only occasional cameos rather than meaningful contributions.
Despite his limited opportunities, Chiesa has made his minutes count when called upon. In 387 minutes of action, he’s registered two goals and two assists, averaging a goal contribution every 97 minutes. Statistically, that’s better than some regular starters in the league.
What’s more, La Repubblica reports that Liverpool’s medical and coaching staff have noted a visible improvement in his physical condition. His energy and vocal encouragement from the bench haven’t gone unnoticed, highlighting a player still committed, even amid professional frustration.

But the feeling persists that the marriage between Chiesa and Liverpool hasn’t quite worked. Whether due to tactical incompatibility, injury niggles, or simply being down the pecking order behind the likes of Luis Díaz, Mohamed Salah, and Cody Gakpo, Chiesa is now the subject of serious interest back in Italy.
As speculation around his future grows, Serie A clubs are circling. Lazio and Napoli have previously been mentioned as potential suitors, but now, Roma appear to be stepping to the front of the queue.
According to a detailed report from La Repubblica, Roma manager Claudio Ranieri is eyeing Chiesa as a headline acquisition to usher in a new era at the club.
“Claudio Ranieri’s new idea for the Roma of the future is the return to Italy of Federico Chiesa, as explained by Giulio Cardone during the episode of La Repubblica del Pallone,” the publication reported.
Ranieri, who returned to management with Roma in November, is reportedly keen to build around Chiesa in the 2025/26 season. His ‘mission,’ as described in La Repubblica, is to “regenerate Federico Chiesa.”
With talks already underway for a potential loan deal, Liverpool could soon face a decision. Do they retain a fringe player with proven quality, or allow him to revive his form in a league that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting talents?
“Contacts have already been initiated for the loan of the player from Liverpool to Roma. We will see if it is a negotiation that can develop and in what way.”
Manager Arne Slot has maintained a high-tempo, fluid attacking system that relies heavily on pressing and positional discipline. Perhaps Chiesa’s game hasn’t meshed well with Slot’s tactical demands or perhaps he’s simply fallen victim to Liverpool’s fierce internal competition for forward places.

There is still admiration for Chiesa’s attitude and professionalism. But if he’s to play a central role in Euro 2028 qualifying or regain his starting place in Italy’s national team, regular football will be essential. Roma, under Ranieri’s guidance, could offer him that platform.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the Chiesa situation is frustrating but understandable. You don’t want to see talent go to waste, especially a player who came with such a strong pedigree and had fans dreaming of a Salah successor. His flashes of quality—a clever assist here, a sharp goal there—have shown what he’s capable of, but the consistency just hasn’t followed, largely because he’s never been given the run of games to build momentum.
Arne Slot clearly has a specific blueprint and it looks like Chiesa just doesn’t quite fit. You can’t fault the player’s attitude—being in top physical shape and supporting teammates from the sidelines speaks volumes—but time waits for no one at a club chasing domestic and European success.
If Roma is genuinely pushing for a loan deal, Liverpool would be wise to include a decent loan fee and a conditional buy clause. A strong run in Serie A might either reignite his Anfield career or raise his resale value. Either way, fans will watch with curiosity, not bitterness.
There’s still a top-level player in Federico Chiesa—but maybe Anfield just wasn’t the right stage for his renaissance.
