Cesc Fabregas has emerged as a potential candidate for the Leipzig job, which was come as welcome news for the Owls.

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas is now understood to be one of several managers in the frame for the RB Leipzig job, which could be a big step for Sheffield Wednesday when it comes to keeping their own boss Danny Rohl.

This will come as a welcome update to the Owls, with Rohl also thought to be on the list of Leipzig’s potential appointments. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is another name on their shortlist, according to journalist Philipp Hinze.

Recent speculation has made Rohl’s exit from Wednesday look increasingly likely, with the young German having also been linked with the Leicester and Southampton jobs.

Now though, with another possible option coming to light for Leipzig, the Owls can be slightly more hopeful that Rohl could still be in charge at Hillsborough next season.

Cesc Fabregas linked with move from Como to RB Leipzig; Danny Rohl also in the mix

Leipzig are on the hunt for Marco Rose’s replacement, after they sacked the 48-year-old at the end of last month. They are currently sat fifth in the Bundesliga, and a fresh appointment is not expected to come until prior to the 2025-26 season.

Rohl is building a big reputation for himself as a result of his work with Wednesday, both in England and Germany, and has been heavily linked with the job of late, alongside Palace’s Austrian chief, Glasner (pictured).

Now though, Hinze reports that Fabregas has emerged as a third potential candidate, which will serve as a minor, but still potentially significant, boost for the Owls.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder is impressing in his first senior managerial role, with his Como side currently sat 13th in their first Serie A campaign for 21 years.

Hinze also added that Al-Ahli’s Matthias Jaissle (who used to manage Red Bull Salzburg) and Brentford’s Thomas Frank are targets that are unlikely to materialise. Frank is understood to not see Leipzig as a strong career move, leaving the current shortlist sitting at three.

It remains to be seen whether Rohl will potentially switch back to his homeland and take on the job, but there can be no mistake made about the fact that his stock is certainly on the rise.

Danny Rohl looks likely to be continually linked with jobs - Sheffield Wednesday aren't out of the woods yet

Rohl’s work at Hillsborough up to now has been so impressive that it looks likely he will continually be linked with other jobs.

Having turned Wednesday around last season and saved them from relegation, Rohl has built on those foundations this term and had them firmly in the race for the play-offs until just a couple of weeks ago.

The 35-year-old is quickly gaining a reputation as a forward-thinking and progressive young boss, both of which are characteristics that are always likely to catch the eye of clubs at the top level.

With Russell Martin also in the frame for the Leicester job, and both Liam Rosenior and Will Still attracting interest from Southampton, Wednesday can at least take solace from the fact that, in all these links, Rohl is not the sole candidate for any of the jobs.

The fact that Leipzig, Leicester and Southampton all have other options will surely be a source of renewed hope for the Owls and their fans, but if these recent links are anything to go by, interest in Rohl is unlikely to die down any time soon.
