It was a special night for Liverpool in the Champions League as they gained automatic qualification, and Mohamed Salah became the first Liverpool player to get to 50 goals in Europe.
Manager Arne Slot said: “Special is the word that describes Mo’s time at this club. He’s been outstanding for this club for so long, and he still is. If Mo goes 1-vs-1, there’s a serious chance he’s going to score.”
Salah scored the Reds’ first of the evening, before Lille equalised through Jonathan David. But Liverpool weren’t level for long, scoring the winner in the 67th minute courtesy of Harvey Elliott.
Liverpool might have qualified into the next round, but Slot isn’t getting too excited yet: “Some teams are high in the league table because they had a lucky draw or some teams are low because they had a very difficult draw. It’s far off to say that it’s an advantage to be first or second.
“We still dont know if that’s an advantage or not. You might be lucky or you might be unlucky. Ending up eighth could mean you are lucky.”
The Dutchman was however pleased at the fact that his side will miss the next qualifying round, and his players can have some rest that a lot of teams won’t have.
“For me the most important thing about tonight is that we have managed to skip a round. And that is definitely worth a bit.”
