Josep Martinez says that he “always has to be ready” after a successful Serie A debut for Inter Milan against Genoa yesterday.
The Spaniard spoke to InterTV after yesterday’s match, via FCInterNews. He reacted to the 1-0 victory, his first league appearance for the Nerazzurri.
Goalkeeper Josep Martinez has had to wait a while to make his first Serie A start for Inter Milan. The former RB Leipzig goalkeeper joined the Nerazzurri from Genoa last summer.
And it was against his former team the Grifone that Martinez has finally put on the gloves for Inter in Serie A.
It was an injury to first-choice Inter keeper Yann Sommer that handed Martinez this opportunity.
Inter signed the 26-year-old to be the backup to Sommer, and then to eventually succeed the Swiss.
But Sommer has proven a tough player to displace from the Inter starting eleven so far.
But it was an injury that forced Yann Sommer out of the Inter Milan starting eleven.
The Swiss suffered a thumb fracture in training this week.
Martinez finally got his chance. And the Spaniard admitted that “This has been a very emotional week.”
“You know how Sommer got injured, and I had to play.”

“And then I was going up against my former teammates. But I tried to face this match in a normal way.”
Martinez noted that “I’ve been here for many months, training in preparation for this moment.”
The 26-year-old said that “I’m learning a lot.”
“This is how the role of the goalkeeper is. You come in when there’s a problem, and you always have to be ready.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do over the last few months,” Martinez said.
“I knew that I’d have an opportunity in the Coppa no matter what,” noted the Spaniard. “So I was already focused.
